A civil society group, ‘Concerned Nigerians Congress, CNC’ has slammed the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu over a statement credited to him that homicide in the north are perpetrated by foreigners.
In a statement by the group through its convener, Comrade Isaac Agoms, it described the statement by the Police boss as another flimsy excuse from what they called “unproductive Service chiefs” amid highest level of insecurity in the history of the country stressing that such a remarks connotes hopelessness and helplessness.
Agoms said that until President Buhari overhauls the security apparatus of the country and allow merit to stand instead of nepotism, litany of excuses will continue to flood the public space by the security agencies.
The group argued that for the President to appoint only northerners to man the security agencies is the starting point of failure stressing that for the fact that northerners know that everything relating to crimes will end up at the desk of their tribesman is sufficient to break laws with impunity.
Adamu, had in a town-hall meeting on peace and security held on Wednesday in Zuru, Kebbi State said that the lingering banditry in the North-West and North-Central Nigeria has an international dimension.
“Also we believe that because of what is happening in the North-East and the fact that the military troops are doing a great job in the fight against insurgency there, most of the bandits are running toward the North-West of the country and we have evidence.
“When we operated in Kaduna, Birnin Gwari, where we attacked a group of bandits, we realised that most of them came from Islamic State of West Africa, who are terrorists, kidnapping for ransom.
“So, the issue is not at the level you are looking at it, it is a big issue and we must work together to address it.
“This is why President Muhammadu Buhari does not rest because of these complaints coming from the North-West and North-Central on banditry,” the IGP said.
Adamu however, urged every Nigerian to see the fight against insecurity as a collective responsibility.
