Orji Kalu regains freedom at last

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu

SENATE Chief Whip, and former Abia State governor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has regained freedom from the Correctional Centre after spending six months in jail.

The development followed the order of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos which ordered immediate release of the former governor.

Justice Muhammad Liman of the Federal High Court in Lagos had on Tuesday set aside the trial, conviction and sentence of the former governor to 12 years imprisonment on December 5, 2019, in accordance with earlier ruling of the Supreme Court, and consequently, ordered immediate release of Kalu who had been in jail on the hitherto conviction.

Also set free in the judgment is Slok Nigeria Limited which was earlier ordered to be wound up and its assets forfeited to Federal Government.

Kalu had gone to court asking for his release in line with the Supreme Court’s judgment last month nullifying his trial and conviction.
