Wike, Obaseki, 34 others drag Buhari to court over ‘arbitrary’ policy

The governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, his Edo state counterpart, Godwin Obaseki alongside thirty-four governors of the other states in the country have files a suit against President Muhammadu Buhari at the Supreme Court challenging a controversial presidential order.


Few months ago, May precisely, Buhari signed Presidential Executive Order No. 00-10 of 2020.

The governors argue in the suit that the executive order was illegal and demanded that the supreme court quash it.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), are the sole respondents to the lawsuit filed by their respective attorneys-general.

The application read:

“Since May 5, 2009, the defendant has not funded the capital and recurrent expenditures of the State High Courts, Sharia Court of Appeal and the Customary Court of Appeal of the various states, apart from paying only the salaries of the judicial officers of the said courts.

“The states have been solely responsible for funding the capital and recurrent expenditures of the State High Courts, Sharia Court of Appeal, and the Customary Court of Appeal in the states, which the defendant has failed and/or refused to fund.”
