New electricity tariff to be out next week- NERC

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC has said that a new consumer electricity tarrif will be released this week. However, it says that the new tariffs would be user-friendly assuring that the Federal Government cannot introduce a new regimen that will have negative impacts on the citizenry. The Commission added that the Federal Government together with the 11 power distribution companies had examined the new rates.

In the penultimate week, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, SAN gave a hint that consumers of electricity are likely to pay more owing to the new tarrifs on the way. The minister emphatically noted that the new electricity tarrif will boost electricity supply in the country.

The Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Sam Amadi in an address to journalists  stated that after due consideration of various submissions by all the stakeholders particularly the distribution companies, the new electricity tarrifs would be ready and signed off by the commission this week. According to him, “we have gone to the distribution companies (DISCOs) and got their feedback; gone to the government and got their feedback. In our view, we have basically done the numbers. It is not about tarrif increase, it is also not about financial work; itn is only remaining the regulatory work. In the week, we should sign off on the new tarrifs”.

Speaking further, the NERC Chairman informed the audience that the commission would commence the verification  of the accumulated debts owed the Distribution companies by the government ministries, Departments, and Agencies aw well as military and the police barracks, among other security structures.
